Research Associate

John W. Stockwell, Jr.

(Owing to hair loss) John wears many hats in the Center. He is a research associate with CWP as well as principal investigator of the Seismic Unix (SU) project, managing the popular CWP/SU free seismic software package. In 2002, John received a Special Commendation Award from the Society of Exploration Geophysicists in recognition of his work on the SU project. John is also the sponsor contact regarding the many proprietary software packages available at CWP. In addition, he manages the CWP computer net, as well as the 32 processor Linux cluster. He is co-author of Mathematics of Multidimensional Seismic Imaging, Migration, and Inversion, with Norm Bleistein and Jack Cohen. John received a Distinguished Volunteer Award from the SEG Foundation in 2005 for his Timelines of Geoscience and Geophysics and of Exploration Geophysics and the Petroleum Industry (The Leading Edge, October 2005, SEG 75th Anniversary).

Postdoctoral Fellows
Eduardo Silva
Eduardo works with the Exploration Department’s Geophysical Technology Group in Petrobras. He received a PhD in applied geophysics from Federal University of Bahia (Brazil) in 1993. He has been employed by Petrobras since 1985 in several positions including: seismic acquisition, seismic processing, training, as well as research and development. Eduardo created the first version of the software GeBR, an open-source interface for seismic processing. He has filed four patent applications for Petrobras and in 2001 and 2005 he received the Petrobras Inventor Award. In 2002 and 2004 he was awarded Best Oral Presentation in the Petrobras Symposium of Applied Geophysics. Since 2000, he has taught seismic method courses within Petrobras. And since 2003, he has taught the course, seismic imaging in seismic exploration at the Federal University of Ouro Preto, in association with Petrobras. Eduardo's research interests include Gaussian beams, imaging velocity analysis and software development.
